WORK PACKAGE 4

TEST AND EVALUATE

Test and evaluate different ways of improving air quality and reducing overheating in schools and understand how these changes affect children’s health and wellbeing.

What We Will Do

Test different ways to improve air quality and reduce overheating in schools.

Find out whether air-cleaning technologies, such as HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, improve children's health over the long term.

Understand what school leaders and staff think about these technologies and other measures to create healthier, more environmentally friendly schools.

Learn how children experience and adapt to hot classroom temperatures.

Develop a practical framework that schools can use to evaluate the impact of environmental and net zero improvements.

How We Will Do It

Study air quality and health data from schools in Bradford that have been using HEPA air filters since 2021.

Interview school leaders and staff to understand their experiences, priorities, and views on air quality, energy use, and environmental sustainability.

Monitor classroom temperatures and test different ways of reducing the impact of heat on pupils and staff.

Work with researchers, schools, and other stakeholders to create a standard approach for evaluating the success of interventions (measures put in place to improve health and environment) in educational settings.

Why This Matters

This research will provide real-world evidence about which measures work best to improve air quality, reduce overheating, and support children’s health and wellbeing. It will also help schools make informed decisions about effective and affordable measures that create healthier learning environments while supporting net zero goals.
