The Research

Improving Indoor Environments
for Children’s Health

There are almost 127,000 nurseries and schools in England and Wales, where more than 11 million children and young people learn every day. CHILI is studying how to make these indoor learning environments healthier as school buildings are being adapted to be more environmentally friendly.

Poor air quality indoors and the effects of climate change, such as higher temperatures, can influence children’s physical and mental health. CHILI aims to find practical solutions by looking at how school buildings, air quality, heat, and children’s health are connected. This research will help identify ways to create healthier and more comfortable places for children to learn.

CHILI draws on multiple disciplines and has six main goals to achieve its aims

Work Package 1

Map

We will map variations in indoor air quality and heat in educational settings.

Work Package 2

discussing air quality data and charts during a team meeting

Understand

We will understand the impact of IAQ and heat in educational settings on children’s health and education

Work Package 3

Model

We will model various adaptation and mitigation net zero pathways in educational settings and associated health and infrastructure adaptation costs.

Work Package 4

Test and evaluate

We will test and evaluate the impact of various interventions in educational settings on IAQ, heat exposure and associated health impacts.

Work Package 5

Involve

We will involve children and young People and school communities in CHILI activities, empowering them to improve indoor environmental quality.

Work Package 6

Engage

We will engage a wide range of stakeholders to develop the research design and co-create impact.
