Indoor Environments in a Net Zero World – CHILI Begins Its Work!

February 2025

CHILI (Child and Adolescent Health Impacts of Learning Indoor Environments under Net Zero) has officially launched its research to address the critical challenge of improving the health of children and young people in indoor learning environments.

Funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), CHILI’s ultimate goal is to create healthier, more comfortable school environments that support the health and learning of children as buildings become increasingly energy-efficient and the climate changes.

By involving children, teachers, and health professionals in the process, the CHILI Hub will ensure that the voices of those directly affected are central to the solutions. Transdisciplinary research will focus on collecting and combining data on indoor air pollution, temperature, health, and education to build models that predict the long-term impacts of changes to schools and nurseries. CHILI will also test and evaluate whether current technologies, such as air filters and ventilation systems, can effectively reduce health risks.

As the UK moves towards a zero-carbon future, the CHILI Hub’s work will be crucial in shaping sustainable school environments that prioritise the health of future generations.
